SEO Copywriting
Without content your site is not living up to its fullest potential. You don't want your site to be empty for a host of reasons, of which there are three you might want to spend a minute thinking about.
Content Gets You Long-Tail Traffic
Did you know that 40 per-cent of all search queries Google ever sees are completely unique and therefore contain phrases you could never anticipate? For this reason just by having relevant content on your pages you can score traffic no keyword tool is capable to predict.
And is relevant good… It's the kind of traffic you want to have regardless of its volume. If your site sells purple shovels, you might want to rank for phrases like "where to get those cute looking pink garden tools you can dig with". While it's an arbitrarily long search phrase to chase on purpose, it is the kind of long-tail traffic you might want to pick up on. You can bet there will be someone who types in just that or something eerily similar.
How qualified do you reckon a prospect is coming from a search term like that?
Very. Exactly.
Content gets you ranked
Just any content can rake in rankings for a host of long-tail search queries, but there is another kind of content you can have on your site. It's called good content. Good content gets passed around. It doesn't need to be stellar or even of academic quality to reach your target audience, except for when you're targeting university professors of course. Once it does reach your target audience, they connect.
When people truly get what you're saying and it solves a problem of theirs they'll like it. And 'like' it. The difference between a body of text and good content is that the latter conveys value, solves problems and is worth reading the very least.
Just take a look at what gets shared in social media. You can do better than that, there is no reason why you couldn't. You can also hire folks, who can do it for you.
When your content is shared it also gets linked to. It's the simplest, cheapest and most honest way of getting incoming links. And I trust you already know what incoming links do to your pages. Precisely, they help them rank and get even more traffic.
Content helps you brand your pages
There is no better way of saying what you want to say than … well, saying it. Put your thoughts about the industry on your pages and let others gauge your expertise.
Better yet, let others do it for you. I remember clearly when I first sat down with the clear goal in mind: I will produce the best four hundred words long article the world has ever seen. It was a flop. It read as if a seven year old wrote it and had more spelling and grammatical errors I care to admit.
Looking back at what I put online two years ago for the whole world to see is not something I do often; it gives me the shivers.
Your content does not have to be a sales pitch from start to end. It doesn't have to contain a sales pitch at all. Sometimes it's enough to get the word out there, have some food for the search engines and content for people to share.
This article is 683 words long, which is above the standard length most people use for their sites. I believe the sweet spot is somewhere between 500 and 750 words. Articles longer than 300-400 words get indexed more quickly even with no links pointing to them whatsoever.
Longer articles also allow you to use more synonyms, more related phrases and thus pick up on the 'accidental' long-tail traffic more effectively.
Keeping it under 700-800 words is suggested because most visitors won't bother to read a massive wall of text regardless of the amount of value given away in it.
I can't blame them; a clear point can be made in some 600 words.
